Being observed was a very different experience than observing another class. When I first heard about the assignment, I had to coordinate with both Karah, the UTA who was observing me, and my professor to schedule the observation on a day that I would be more active in the classroom. My professor suggested that I give my lesson plan on integrating quotations that day. This was one of my better lesson plans from last semester, so I’m glad that the timing lined up so that she could watch me give it. When I was observing another class, none of the students were made aware of why I was there taking notes during their class time. To avoid this problem with Karah, I made sure to warn my students that she would be coming in. Hopefully, she did not feel too out of place in the classroom. Overall, I think the lesson plan went pretty well and I got some good feedback from Karah, my professor, and even a few of my students.
In her reflection, she noted that her engagement on a typical day is very similar to mine. I typically spend most of class grading and occasionally giving tips to students on how I went about completing my assignments when I took the class. She was coming from another class, so she didn’t get to see me interact with the students before class, so I was worried that she would think that wasn’t taking enough of an active role in the classroom or taking any time to get to know my students better. I really liked reading her reflection on the experience because it sounded like she got a pretty good sense of how our class is typically run and how that compares to how her own class is typically run.
